Tuntum chief joins national board

East Midlands housing provider Tuntum Housing Association has announced the appointment of its chief executive, Charmaine Simei, to the board of the National Housing Federation (NHF).

Charmaine brings more than 30 years’ experience in the social housing sector and currently leads Tuntum, which manages more than 1600 affordable properties across 12 local authority areas in the East Midlands.

Throughout her career, she has been involved in initiatives supporting diversity and inclusion within housing, including previously serving as a mentor with the Housing Diversity Network.

She is also an executive member of BME National, which represents Black and minority ethnic housing associations across England.

In her new national role, Charmaine will join three other housing sector chief executives on the NHF board.

Together, they will support the federation’s 2025–2030 business strategy and help ensure effective governance for its members.

Her appointment will see her contribute to national discussions and decision-making affecting housing associations and the wider social housing sector.

Charmaine said: “It is a privilege to be appointed to the NHF board.

“I have been in the sector for 30 years and my belief in the role that housing plays in changing lives and building stronger communities has never dimmed, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute at a national level.

“I look forward to working with fellow board members to champion the needs of residents and colleagues, support and promote the vital work of the sector, and help shape a resilient, inclusive and sustainable future for social housing.”

Deirdre LaBassiere, Tuntum chair, added: “At a time when social housing faces both challenges and opportunities, we are thrilled to see Charmaine bringing her experience, insight and values to the NHF Board.

“This is a moment of immense pride for Tuntum.

“Founded as a Black-led housing association nearly 40 years ago, we have always believed in the power of representation, inclusion and community leadership.

“Charmaine’s appointment reflects not only her personal achievements, but also the significant contribution that community-based housing associations make to our sector.”

NHF chief executive Kate Henderson added: “We are delighted to be joined by four highly respected leaders from across the social housing sector.

“Together they bring extensive knowledge from different regions, organisations and communities, strengthening the breadth of expertise on our board.

“Their experience and perspectives will be invaluable in helping the NHF to support members and in championing the vital role housing associations play in addressing the country’s housing crisis.”
