Full steam ahead for new sea cadets headquarters
A nautical youth organisation is feeling buoyant after securing operations hub support.
Filey Sea Cadets has been backed by council officials to build a new headquarters.
It says the blueprint will “transform” the group’s existing North Yorkshire base into a “significant new community asset for the town”.
The organisation adds its new home will replace a 100-year-old Southdene Pavilion building with a “modern centre of excellence” complete with 48-bed capacity dorms, a multi-use community hall, powerboat storage and improved disability access.
It has now launched a £3.5 million fundraising campaign to help support the project, having secured planning approval from North Yorkshire Council.
Site clearance work is expected to start next month, with construction slated for early 2027 ahead of a spring 2028 opening.
Steven Hopkinson, Filey Sea Cadets’ chair, said: “This is a pivotal moment for us.
“Our existing building is no longer fit for purpose, and the new headquarters will provide facilities that reflect the dedication and commitment of everyone involved.
“Redeveloping the existing site was essential; its central location means it remains accessible to young people across our community.
“We’re not just preserving a legacy, we’re creating the foundations for the next generation of Filey Sea Cadets.”
The 100-year-old building has been used by Filey Sea Cadets for 40 years, having previously served as a theatre, flower hall and dance hall.
Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, added: “I am delighted the plans have been given the green light.
“The new headquarters will be a tremendous asset for Filey, giving young people the opportunity to develop valuable skills, confidence and friendships.”
