Nine surgeons launch Gateshead urology clinic
Nine North East consultant surgeons have joined forces to open a specialist private urology clinic in Gateshead, offering patients access to a range of treatments under one roof.
Forbury Newcastle, based at The Beverley Hospital in Team Valley, brings together the specialists under the Tyneside Urology Partners name.
All nine consultants also hold NHS positions at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including the Freeman Hospital.
The clinic will treat conditions including kidney stones, enlarged prostate, prostate and bladder cancers, recurrent urinary tract infections, incontinence and complex reconstructive conditions.
Its opening comes amid continued pressure on NHS services, with 368,963 people in England awaiting urology treatment at the end of July 2026.
Rather than operating separate private practices, the surgeons will work collaboratively, directing patients to the consultant whose expertise best matches their condition.
The partnership is led clinically by Matthew Shaw, who specialises in kidney stones, enlarged prostate and prostate cancer diagnosis, having pioneered holmium laser prostate surgery in the North East.
Matthew, pictured below, said: “Urology covers a huge range of conditions and, between the nine of us, we have developed expertise across every area.
“Working as a partnership means we can put the patient’s problem first and match them with the consultant best placed to help them.
“We all have strong links to the North East and understand the needs of patients here.
“We’re excited to bring this approach to private urology care in the region.”

Matthew is joined by Bhavan Rai, a consultant urological and robotic surgeon at the Freeman Hospital, who specialises in robotic cancer surgery and received a national urology award in 2025.
Other partners include Jonathan Barclay, Rajan Veeratterapillay, Arjun Nambiar, John Fitzpatrick, Campbell Tait, Angus Luk and Rahul Gujadhur.
The clinic is a joint venture between The Forbury Clinic, which operates in Reading and London, and The Beverley Hospital, marking Forbury's expansion into the North East.
It will accept insured and self-funding patients, with additional services including paperless prescribing and AI-assisted clinic letters designed to improve communication with patients and GPs.
