Young choir on track for Mercury Prize
More than 70 schoolchildren from across the North East are preparing to hit the right notes as the Mercury Prize returns to Newcastle.
The LNER 2026 Mini Mercury Choir will stage a special pop-up performance at Newcastle Central station next Thursday (October 22), ahead of the prestigious music awards ceremony at the city’s Utilita Arena.
The young singers have been rehearsing at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, preparing two songs for the occasion, including a track by a North East artist shortlisted for this year’s prize.
The performance forms part of celebrations surrounding the Mercury Prize, which recognises outstanding musical achievement across a range of genres.
LNER is returning as the event’s official travel partner, helping transport invited guests, judges and shortlisted artists to Newcastle for the ceremony.
The awards were held outside London for the first time last year, with Newcastle again hosting the event in 2026.
The railway operator expects many of the nominated performers and VIP guests to travel to the city by train, while the young choir's station performance will help build excitement ahead of the evening's celebrations.
Olivia Jeffery, brand partnership lead at LNER, said: “LNER is proud to once again be the Official Travel Partner for the 2026 Mercury Prize.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to Newcastle for this prestigious event and we are delighted to be providing a platform for young local talent with the 2026 edition of the LNER Mini Mercury Choir.
“Who knows, some of its members may turn out to be Mercury Prize shortlisted artists of the future!”
