Question Time offers broadcasting insight
A County Durham college has taken centre stage in a national television debate, giving students a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of broadcasting.
East Durham College’s Peterlee campus welcomed the BBC’s Question Time this month, with presenter Fiona Bruce hosting an hour of political discussion featuring politicians and national newspaper commentators.
The panel included Labour’s Jake Richards, Conservative Harriet Cross, Liberal Democrat Max Wilkinson, the Daily Mirror’s Kevin Maguire and the Daily Telegraph’s Annabel Denham.
The broadcast followed two days of preparations, with production crews transforming part of the campus into a television studio, installing staging, lighting, cameras and specialist equipment.
For media students, the visit provided an opportunity to meet BBC production staff, tour the set and outside broadcast vehicles, and learn about the technical expertise required to deliver a major television programme.
Meanwhile, professional cookery students gained practical hospitality experience by preparing and serving refreshments for guests and production teams throughout the day.
The event forms part of the college’s wider commitment to connecting classroom learning with industry experience and career opportunities.
Recent initiatives have included a visit from John Allison, lead machinist at Alpine Formula One Team, who shared insights into high-performance engineering and motorsport careers.
Floristry students have also represented the college at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, showcasing their creative skills on a national stage.
College leaders say such opportunities help learners develop confidence, strengthen employability skills and gain valuable experience of professional working environments.
Scott Bullock, principal and chief executive of East Durham College, said: “Hosting BBC’s Question Time is a proud moment for East Durham College, but what makes opportunities like this so valuable is the experience they create for our learners.
“We are passionate about creating experiences that bring learning to life and open doors to future careers.
“These experiences are about more than the moment itself; they build confidence, develop valuable skills and help our students understand what they can achieve.
“We want every learner to leave East Durham College with not only a qualification, but also the experience, ambition and confidence to succeed in their chosen career.”
