Care provider opens new training centre
A North East care provider has invested £18,000 in a specialist training centre to help more people with complex health conditions receive care in their own homes.
Springfield Darlington has opened its new Centre of Excellence on Chesnut Street, providing advanced training for carers supporting people with complex medical needs.
The facility, which includes refurbished offices and dedicated training resources, will support the development of 850 Springfield Healthcare employees across the North East.
Its opening has been made particularly meaningful by a donation from the family and friends of Kathleen Nesom, who received complex and palliative care at home for five months before passing away earlier this year.
In recognition of their contribution, a dedicated area of the centre has been named ‘Kathleen’s Corner’, which was officially opened by members of her family today (October 21).
The investment comes amid growing demand for specialist home care services, with Springfield Darlington taking on around six new complex care packages across the region since February.
Training will cover areas including motor neurone disease, spinal injuries, bowel management, cough assist and tracheostomy care, helping carers develop the practical skills needed to support people with increasingly complex conditions.
Programmes will be delivered by Springfield Healthcare’s specialist internal training teams, alongside partners including Fresenius, district nursing teams and universities.
Officials hope the centre will eventually become a wider training hub for other care providers, while helping reduce pressure on NHS services by enabling more people to receive specialist support outside hospital.
Theresa Bradley-Comstive, chief operating officer at Springfield Healthcare, said: “The opening of our Centre of Excellence marks an important investment in our people and, ultimately, in the people and families we support.
“Complex care requires highly skilled teams who understand not just the clinical needs of the person they are caring for, but also the importance of dignity, independence and enabling people to remain at home wherever possible.
“Having a dedicated space where our teams can develop their skills, share knowledge and learn alongside specialist partners will help us continue to provide the very highest standards of care.”
Kathleen’s family made their donation after experiencing the support provided by Springfield Darlington during her final months, hoping to help other families benefit from similar care.
Theresa added: “Having Kathleen’s family officially open ‘Kathleen’s Corner’ makes the centre particularly meaningful.
“Kathleen’s family experienced first-hand the difference that high-quality care at home can make, and their decision to donate in her memory will help us develop the next generation of carers who can provide that support to other families.
“We are incredibly grateful to them and hope Kathleen’s legacy will live on through the people who are able to receive the specialist care they need in the comfort of their own home.”
Kathleen’s family added: “Kathleen received palliative care at home and the support she and our family received meant so much to us.
“We wanted to make a donation in Kathleen’s memory that could help other families experience the same opportunity to have their loved one cared for at home.
“We are incredibly proud that ‘Kathleen’s Corner’ has been created in her memory and were honoured to officially open it.
“Knowing that her legacy will help Springfield Darlington train its teams to support other people with complex care needs is very special to us.”
Alongside improving care provision, the centre will offer staff opportunities to gain specialist qualifications and progress their careers.
Springfield Healthcare is also exploring further partnerships and training pathways, including nursing associate programmes and placements, with the potential for additional jobs as its complex care services expand.
