Council takes smarter approach to gritting
A North East council has invested in new technology to improve its gritting service and keep roads safe this winter.
Gateshead Council has installed five weather sensors at key locations across the borough, providing real-time information on road surface and air temperatures.
The technology will help maintenance teams identify where and when gritting is needed, taking account of varying conditions across urban, rural and higher-ground areas.
The investment complements existing forecasting systems, with council teams on call around the clock throughout winter to respond to snow, ice and freezing temperatures.
Councillor Garry Thompson, cabinet member for environment, said: “Our teams work incredibly hard throughout the winter, often through the night and in very challenging conditions, to help keep roads safe and traffic moving across Gateshead.
“This investment in new weather sensors will give us even better information about conditions in different parts of the borough, helping us make informed decisions and deliver the most effective gritting service possible.
“It is another example of our commitment to using the latest technology to support residents and keep our communities connected during the winter months.”
