New cultural venue looks to light up half term
A new County Durham cultural attraction is offering families a programme of free and bookable activities this half term, including nature trails, creative workshops and Halloween celebrations.
Durham County Council’s The Light will host a series of autumn-themed events from Wednesday, October 28 to Sunday, November 1.
Free activities include an autumn nature trail, encouraging children to explore the grounds and discover local wildlife.
On November 1, visitors can also help artist Betty Barnet Brown create a suspended poppy installation for Remembrance Day, using thousands of woollen and fabric poppies made for Durham Market's Remembrance appeal.
Paid activities include a leaf lantern-making workshop on October 28, costing £6 per child, followed by a Halloween disco on October 29, featuring face painting, music, refreshments and a fancy dress competition.
A ceramic painting workshop will also take place on October 31, with tickets costing £10, while children can visit the Victory Over the Sun: Encounters with Light exhibition free with a paying adult during half term.
Councillor Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, said: “There’s no shortage of things to do at The Light this autumn.
“We recognise that it can be an expensive time of year in the lead up to Halloween and Christmas, and that’s why several of these sessions are free.
“We hope these sessions demonstrate that The Light is not just an art and culture venue, but also a great space for activities and events.
“Combined with the café and shop, our new venue will be a great destination during the colder months.”
