North Star Housing Group has completed a £600,000 roofing improvement programme at Aspen Gardens in Stockton-on-Tees

Housing provider raises the roof with investment

A North East housing provider has invested £600,000 in improving a supported housing scheme for older residents in Stockton-on-Tees.

North Star Housing Group has replaced the roofs at Aspen Gardens, a sheltered accommodation complex comprising 50 flats for people aged over 55.

The investment aims to address longstanding problems with leaks, improve thermal efficiency and reduce the need for emergency repairs, while protecting the building for years to come.

Delivered by roofing contractor Evenii Ltd, the project involved replacing approximately 4500sq metres of roofing across 23 blocks, with more than 45,000 tiles installed.

Three internal vaulted ceilings were also completed and decorated as part of the improvements.

With residents remaining in their homes throughout the work, the project was carefully coordinated to minimise disruption, supported by regular meetings over tea and coffee to keep residents and staff informed.

Paula Aungiers, asset and sustainability manager at North Star, which manages more than 4000 social housing properties across the North East, said: “The proactive replacement of the roof provides a long-term solution following a history of leaks and reactive repairs, helping to protect residents’ homes and reduce future disruption.

“The project reflects our commitment to investing in the quality and sustainability of our homes.

“We would also like to recognise the roofing contractor, Evenii, for their professional approach, high standard of workmanship and consideration for residents throughout the works.”

To celebrate the completion of the programme, North Star hosted a special event in Aspen Gardens’ communal bistro and lounge, bringing residents, staff and contractors together.

The celebrations included afternoon tea, live music, garden games, beauty treatments and a tombola, with prizes donated by local businesses involved in the project.

Catherine Hartigan, older persons services team manager at North Star, added: “I’m delighted that residents will benefit from a brand-new roof and this important investment in keeping their homes and shared spaces safe and comfortable.

“It was heartwarming to see residents, the North Star team, Care team and Catering staff all enjoying a wonderful day of celebrations together.

“The singers in particular went down so well.

“The party was a lovely opportunity to bring everyone together and say thank you for their patience throughout the work.”

Dean Goyns, company director at Evenii, added: “We have enjoyed working alongside a great client, brilliant care staff, and residents.

“We are pleased that the roofs around the scheme are safe and secure for many years to come.”
