Tofu firm aims to dish up growth with factory move

A tofu product firm has European growth on the menu after breaking ground on a factory venture.

The Tofoo Co. is building a new base.

Bosses say the North Yorkshire site will help double capacity and support ambitions to make more than 10,000 tonnes of tofu by 2033.

Based on Malton Enterprise Park, on the outskirts of the market town, they add it represents an “investment in the business’ long-term competitiveness” that will help build on recent expansions into French and German markets.

Set to include a development kitchen and pilot plant, officials say it will also be fitted with solar panels, electric vehicle charging points and heat recovery systems.

Work on the factory – led by Harrison Developments Malton LLP – is expected to be completed late next year.

David Knibbs, chief executive of The Tofoo Co., whose products include tofu-based burgers and frankfurters, said: “We’ve built a strong position in the UK tofu market, and see significant opportunities ahead.

“This investment is about creating the foundations for our next chapter and ensuring we have the capacity, capability and flexibility to meet growing demand from both the UK and Europe.”

Sean Harrison, managing director at Harrison Developments Malton LLP, added: “This is an important investment for the business, and we look forward to delivering a facility that supports its ambitions for growth, operational efficiency and future innovation.”

The venture has been backed by HSBC UK alongside The Tofoo Co. shareholders and Comitis Capital.

Stephen Smith, HSBC UK senior relationship director, said: “The new facility will provide the capacity and infrastructure the business needs to build on its strong position in the UK and pursue further growth in international markets.”
