BGF backs engineering firm’s ‘growth ambitions’
A long-established engineering consultancy is gearing up for its next phase of growth after securing a multi-million-pound investment from growth capital investor BGF.
Edinburgh-headquartered Harley Haddow, which has nearly 200 employees across the UK, says it will use the funding to expand its services, strengthen its national presence and pursue selective acquisitions.
Founded in 1950, the firm specialises in mechanical and electrical engineering, civil and structural engineering, geotechnical services, fire engineering and building sustainability.
More than 80 per cent of its live projects have a decarbonisation or net-zero focus, reflecting growing demand for expertise in improving building performance and reducing carbon emissions.
Its portfolio includes work on the BAFTA headquarters and V&A in London, SWG3 in Glasgow and the ongoing restoration of the glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
The investment follows a period of expansion that has seen Harley Haddow open three offices in England over the past four years and broaden its capabilities through the acquisition of specialist consultancy Pillar Fire.
As part of its next phase of growth, existing director Marc McLuskey will become chief executive, while Charles Layfield joins as non-executive chair through BGF’s Talent Network.
Charles brings experience in scaling professional services businesses, having overseen more than 30 acquisitions during his career.
Marc said: “Harley Haddow has built a strong reputation over 75 years by combining deep technical expertise with a highly personal approach to clients.
“We are now a UK-wide consultancy employing nearly 200 people, with a strong platform from which to continue expanding our geographic reach and service offering.
“BGF’s minority investment model will allow us to accelerate our growth ambitions while ensuring Harley Haddow remains independently managed, with our existing leadership team, culture and values firmly in place.
“BGF’s experience in the built environment sector, collaborative approach and alignment with our ambitions made them the right partner to support the next stage of our journey.”
The deal adds to BGF’s investments in the engineering and built environment sectors, following previous backing for Hydrock and BB7.
John Devine, investor at BGF, added: “Harley Haddow combines 75 years of engineering expertise with the ambition and momentum of a high-growth business.
“The team has built a strong national platform whilst maintaining the culture, technical quality and client relationships that differentiate the business.
“With a strong management team, an established reputation and clear opportunities for organic and acquisitive growth, Harley Haddow is well positioned for its next phase of expansion.
“We’re delighted to be supporting Marc, the directors and the wider team as they continue this journey.”
