Pier Lighting Scheme In The Spotlight For National Award

A new lighting scheme that is illuminating Saltburn’s Victorian Pier from dusk to midnight has been selected as a finalist for a national award.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s scheme, part of its Lighting Our Culture initiative, is in the final three for the annual Lighting Design Awards’ category for Transport Lighting. The nomination takes into consideration the fact that the lighting also stretches up to the Cliff Lift.

The Saltburn scheme will be up against stiff competition from the Mersey Wave at Liverpool, a gateway bridge with lighting, and the Sean O’Casey pedestrian swing bridge in Dublin. The Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism Councillor Dave Fitzpatrick said: “The lighting scheme is already a winner with the public, we’re delighted it has now been selected as a finalist and it would be terrific if we could come out top in this award.”

The funding package for the scheme, part of a £750,000 investment programme in Saltburn, which includes improvements to the Upper Promenade, involves the regional development agency, One NorthEast, the Friends of Saltburn Pier, Saltburn Pier Amusements and the Council. The will be announced at an awards ceremony in London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel on Thursday March 30.
