Students Get To Grips With Cardboard Furniture

A set of cardboard chairs have been created by architecture and interior design students at a North East university. The chairs are the result of a design challenge set to the first-year students at Northumbria University; to build a chair from corrugated cardboard using skilful folding and interlocking and without any mechanical fixings. The chair had to be able to hold the weight of a man comfortably, be easy to build and be aesthetically pleasing. Six of the chairs are currently on display at Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory Gallery where they will be featured alongside an exhibition of paintings by Fine Art graduates. The students have chosen to put their chairs up for sale. Andy Balman Managing Director of The Biscuit Factory Gallery, added: “Chair design is an integral part of everyday life and is also increasingly becoming recognised as a collectible art form through such 20th century design classics as those produced by the likes of Le Corbusier and Charles Eames. “We are pleased to be able to show the work of these young designers in the Gallery setting of The Biscuit Factory and hope that they too go on to great success in their careers.”
