Newcastle University tops business league
Newcastle University spends more time working with businesses than any other university in the UK, according to a Government survey published this week. The number of hours spent by staff ‘engaging with commercial partners’ was measured at all 160 universities and higher education colleges in the UK. Newcastle came out top, with the equivalent of 134 staff working full time with businesses at any one time. The result of the survey is a shot in the arm for regional development agency One NorthEast, which has put the region’s universities at the heart of its strategy for economic growth. The survey concludes that, overall, the UK’s universities are spending more time working with companies. This happens in two ways: university staff can help existing companies develop new products and processes, or ‘spin out’ completely new companies from research discoveries. The Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey is published annually, but this is the first time that data collected from individual universities has been included with the overall findings.
