Thieves aren’t known for being exceptionally bright, but if you’re going to steal petrol, at least a) don’t spill it b) don’t check how much you’ve spilt with your lighter and c) don’t steal from a firefighter’s car. The Boston Globe reports that a teenage boy suffered second and third-degree burns to his legs after trying to siphon petrol from a firefighter’s car. The teenager spilled petrol while trying to steal the petrol, then used his lighter to see how wet his trousers were, accidentally setting himself on fire. The boy was treated in hospital and then charged with larceny.
