North East's most active tourist attractions revealed
The top ten active and healthy tourist attractions in the North East have been revealed as part of a campaign to encourage people to do more exercise. Sport England has teamed up with One NorthEast to create the ‘healthy’ league table on the back of reports of increasing obesity rates among children, which predict that 20% of children in England will be obese by 2010.
The healthy top ten features the Roman frontier of Hadrian’s Wall at the number one spot, followed by Sunderland’s Climbing Wall, Beamish Open Air Museum in Co. Durham, Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, Castle Eden Walkway Country Park, Derwent Walk – a 10.5 mile walk from Swalwell visitor centre to Consett, Kielder Forest and Water, Hamsterley Forest, the 20-mile Newcastle – Gateshead Wylam cycling loop and surfing in the North Sea.
Stephen Baddeley, Interim Chief Executive of Sport England, said: “There are hundreds of active sport and tourist destinations around the country that provide an energetic and healthy day out for all ages and this can be anywhere from the sports club to the seaside. We hope that this Everyday Sport top 10 will inspire the people of the North East to get outside and get active.”
