Picture perfect prize for Gateshead student

A student from Gateshead College will see one of his designs launched this week as part of National Enterprise Week 2006. Matthew Pearson, 17, from Bensham, beat off competition from classmates and the postcard he designed will be dropping through the letterboxes of thousands of teenagers across Tyne and Wear.

Connexions Tyne and Wear have planned a series of events for Enterprise Week to support the message that enterprise skills are highly valued by employers. At one of these events, Matthew will be presented with a framed copy of his artwork and reception staff will be wearing t-shirts displaying the design.

Ken Youngman, local manager for Connexions Tyne and Wear in Gateshead, said: “Young people enjoy being given the autonomy to tackle real challenges and take responsibility for their own actions. Matthew has demonstrated creativity, initiative and the ability to work within a fixed time-scale – we are delighted with the results of his work.”

Gateshead College says it welcomes the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills. Steve Crosby, Graphic design course leader, said: “It makes sense for young people to design things which are aimed at young people. “The students welcomed the challenge and did a great job. It was a really good experience for them and we hope to do more work with Connexions in the future.”
