Third of workers 'unhappy'

Almost one in three people are not happy at work, with managers, lawyers and bankers the least satisfied. The happiest are hairdressers, with three out of five looking forward to going back to work after a day off, according to a new report.

Beauty therapists, childcare workers and plumbers are also among the most content. Workers earning less than £15,000 are far happier than those in the £40,000-£45,000 income bracket, claims a survey of 1,000 adults by City & Guilds. The education and training organisation’s ‘happiness index’ shows bosses believe their staff are actually less satisfied with their job than the survey reveals. Workers complain they wanted more flexible arrangements, training and personal development to make them happier.

Chris Humphries, City & Guilds director general, said: “It may come as a surprise to some that financial reward doesn’t always mean a happier working environment for an employee. “A quarter of all UK workers have left, or would leave, a position because of a lack of training and the survey results clearly demonstrate that some of the happiest workers are those who feel they have a lot of opportunities for professional development.”

Workers in the North East are the happiest, especially those in Newcastle, followed by those in the North, while staff in Scotland are the unhappiest, according to the report.
