£2.9m investment into sport in the North East

Over 2.9m of investment into community sports clubs and coaches in the North East has been announced this week by Sport England. A total of £38.3 million is being invested throughout England to get more people involved in sport. The funding will create 193 enhanced and improved sports clubs and 32 coaches in the North East between now and March 2010. This will increase opportunities for people across the region to get more involved in sport.

Tim Cantle Jones, Chair of North East Regional Sports Board, said: “The Regional Sports Board has always invested in people to provide more opportunities and getting more coaches on the ground whilst investing in local clubs will provide more quality environments. We are delighted to make such a large investment into the development of clubs and coaches in the North East.”

Each of Sport England’s nine Regional Sports Boards decided in March how the investment should be spent in their region to increase participation in sport. Sport England has declared that every region has a role to play in helping Sport England achieve its ambition of getting 2 million people participating more in sport by 2012.

Derek Mapp, Chairman of Sport England, said: “This is much needed good news for community sport. What we at Sport England are now focusing on is how we can energise the nation and get them doing more sport.”
