Preferred Bidder Designate announced for New Tyne Crossing
A consortium led by civil engineering company Bouygues Travaux Publics has been appointed Preferred Bidder Designate for the New Tyne Crossing project, it was announced yesterday. This is a key stage in the development of the second Tyne vehicle tunnel. Between now and the signing of the final contract later this year the project sponsors, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (TWPTA), will undertake negotiations with the Preferred Bidder to ensure the new crossing is delivered in accordance with its aims and objectives.
Councillor David Wood, TWPTA Chair, said: “I am delighted to announce Bouygues as the Preferred Bidder Designate for the New Tyne Crossing. Their commitment to the project to date has been impressive and we look forward to signing the Preferred Bidder Letter with them, negotiating the Final Contract, working with them on the construction of the second vehicle tunnel, and being their partner for the 30 years of the Concession.”
Andrew Sugden, North East Chamber of Commerce director of member relations, said: “It is great news that a consortium with this level of experience is now able to begin work on this crucial project. The delays that have been heaped on the New Tyne Crossing have served no-one, least of all the communities and businesses on either side of the river who depend on this increasingly congested route.”
