Printer scoops quality eco-endorsements

Washington-based Reed Print and Design has joined an elite band of printers by achieving two new quality marks, making it one of only a handful of print specialists to hold both the Forest Stewardship Council’s Chain of Custody and ISO 14001 environmental certifications.

Achieving the FSC Chain of Custody certification endorses the firm’s ability to manage and trace paper products back to sustainable timber sources in an unbroken chain stretching from the forest through to finished print. The award makes Reed one of three North East printers to hold the certification.

The second achievement to be added to the company’s list is international environmental management standard ISO 14001. The standard assesses an organisation’s impact on the environment, from energy consumption and transport through to waste disposal, and is a mark of an organisation’s efforts to ensure it minimises the environmental effects of its products and services.

Reed’s managing director Mark Reed said: “Sustainable procurement is now a big issue across all industries and a growing number of organisations are moving towards specifying printers who are FSC and ISO 14001-certified suppliers, particularly in the public sector where government guidelines are increasingly focused on environmental concerns.

“From the client’s point of view switching to print partners with ‘green’ credentials need have no detrimental impact on quality or performance, or increase their print costs. “Commercial success can go hand in hand with corporate social responsibility and sound environmental practices. We foresee that specifying the use of environmentally-aware printers will eventually become standard across all industries.“Â
