Qualification improves management of volunteers

Project North East (PNE), the NewcastleGateshead based enterprise and economic development agency, is the North East’s first centre to be accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) in order to provide the “Management of Volunteers” qualification, which is specifically designed to improve the management of volunteers in the third sector.

With support from the Northern Rock Foundation, the “Management of Volunteers” programme is aimed at people in the region’s voluntary and community sector who are responsible for managing volunteers.

Tracy Gee of Project North East said: “Project North East decided to introduce the programme because there is significant demand from the sector for a more professional accredited approach to the management of volunteers. Since its launch we have received enquiries from throughout the UK.”

Anne Burleigh, Deputy Director, Northern Rock Foundation, said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the third sector, and often have different motivations to employees. Improving the way they are managed will enable volunteers to achieve their personal goals whilst allowing them to enhance the difference they can make to their organisations and service users.”

Project North East is inviting applications for its second Management of Volunteers programme which will be held in Tees Valley from November 2007–February 2008. For further information and an application form, email Anne-Maria Brown at Project North East at anne-maria.brown@pne.org.
