Get inside their heads
One of the best ways of establishing rapport with anyone - including your audience, is to show that you understand them. Of course, that’s easier said than done, even when you’re one-to-one with people, but it’s very tricky indeed when you’re facing a larger group.
Fortunately there’s a way of doing just that - answer their questions before they have to ask them.
Here’s a very short and simple tip for checking over your presentations: Once you’ve designed your slides, look carefully at each one and ask yourself “What’s the question the audience will be asking when I’ve finished talking about this slide?”
If there’s no obvious question, consider whether you need to re-think the slide! If there is an obvious question, go on to the next slide and check that it answers it… before posing an “obvious question” of its own!
By the way, this is best done a few days after you’ve drafted your presentation!
It’s one of the tricks we teach people on our public training days and it’s proved to be very useful in recent months according to the feedback we’ve been getting, despite being so simple! As always, questions andcomments to me at sme@curved-vision.co.uk
