Metro ranked among best train operators in Britain
The Tyne and Wear Metro has been named as a finalist for a national award for train operators. Metro is in the running to be named SSP Train Operator of the Year at the HSBC Rail Business Awards.
The accolade comes after a year that has seen punctuality top 95% and passenger numbers pass the 39 million mark for the first time in 15 years. Nexus, which owns and operates Metro, is also named as a finalist in the Information Technology Excellence category. This follows the introduction of handheld computers used by Metro Ticket Examiners to reduce fraud on the system.
Mick Carbro, Metro Director, said: “To be shortlisted for this prestigious award shows Metro is up there with the best in Britain. This is a tremendous achievement which reflects the hard work done by everyone at Metro to give passengers the best possible service, day in day out.”
Bernard Garner, Director General of Nexus, said: “Recognition from within the transport industry is one sign Metro is going in the right direction - alongside rising passenger numbers. “I am very pleased that Nexus has also been nominated for Information technology Excellence. Our handheld computers run software developed by our own staff and are making a big difference in the battle against fraud.”
The HSBC Rail Business Awards are held annually, with the winners announced at a ceremony in London on 27 February.
