Flexibility key to attracting top talent

The North East’s leading employers risk losing out on the most talented individuals by not being responsive to the needs of a modern workforce, the Work Wise North East campaign has warned.

Companies involved in flexible working have said that salary is often insufficient in itself to attract highly motivated and accomplished individuals. An increasing number of potential employees are reportedly looking for companies who offer less rigid work conditions.

Companies such as Procter & Gamble, BT, Dickinson Dees and the Onyx Group are all claiming that smarter working practices are the key to finding the best staff.

Technology Solutions Group, Onyx has devised a range of flexible working measures to ensure it attracts the best talent available. Sales and marketing director, Neil Stephenson said: “The IT industry is incredibly competitive and we are up against some major names in the sector when trying to attract the right individuals. “We, as a company, benefit enormously from offering a far greater degree of flexibility than people could access in the past. We know that our staff as individuals also reap the rewards of our smarter working practices.”

Simon Roberson, chairman of Work Wise North East and regional manager at BT, said: “Companies need to be at the forefront of offering employees a work-life balance which is beneficial to employees and customers. Benefits passed on to employees results in loyal, dedicated staff that have a commitment to a company that looks after their needs and provides them with flexibility.

“More and more young people leaving further education are looking for employers than can meet their needs and employers need to look at their practices to attract the best talent and retain the best people.”
