Scientific opportunity for North East engineering

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) will be asking for help from North East firms at an event next month. UKAEA are seeking companies to help engineer the new ITER International Fusion Reactor, and Dan Mistry, ITER’s Fusion and Industry Manager, will speak at the Partners4Engineering event being held at the Wynyard Rooms on Teesside on 12 March.

ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. ITER will be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache in the South of France. More information about ITER and its potential can be found at www.iter.org.

Stan Higgins, CEO of the North East Process Industry Cluster, who are supporting the event, said: “The ITER project is a truly exiting opportunity for local engineering businesses. The construction costs of ITER are estimated at five billion Euro over 10 years, and another five billion Euros are foreseen for the 20-year operation period. The contributions of the ITER Parties will for the largest part consist of components for the machine, so-called ‘in kind’ contributions.”
