NE study reveals UK wants 'The Good Life'

Many of us are hankering after The Good Life, according to a survey carried out as part of the EAT! NewcastleGateshead food festival. The survey found that a third of us would prefer to grown our own vegetables and live off the land if we could.

Surprisingly contrary to popular opinion, teenagers may not be the fast food junkies we are led to believe according the survey carried out by leading independent research organisation Tickbox.net. The survey found that 40% of teenagers, the highest percentage across all age ranges, would like to grow their own vegetables.

Of all the age groups 16-24 year olds would most likely to want grow their own vegetables. Over 55 year-olds were however most likely to already do so.

Simon Preston, EAT! festival director, said: “These findings are very encouraging. If young people take an interest in food, want to know where what they eat comes from and feel that this knowledge is important then this can only bode well for future generations.”

Stella Hall, Creative Director of culture10 at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, who have commissioned EAT!, said: “Its good news that this group appear to have much more of an appetite for growing their own food than many would have thought. EAT! offers something for everyone but some events are particularly targeted at the young and their families which on the basis of these findings should attract a lot of interest.”
