Competition opens for business hopefuls

£2,000 in cash and one-year’s free business accommodation in South Tyneside are amongst the prizes on offer in a competition to find the borough’s next big name in business.

Annual business ideas competition, Biz Idol, launched yesterday to find new entrepreneurs and is open to anyone over the age of 18, wanting to start a business in the South Tyneside area.

Business hopefuls will have just minutes to pitch their business ideas to a panel of high-profile judges from the borough, including Derek Metcalfe, director of Horizonworks and vice-chair of South Tyneside Business Forum and Andrea Freeman, design and development manager for internationally renowned, J Barbour Sons Ltd.

The winner of the competition, supported by South Tyneside Means Business, will be announced at a prestigious ceremony at this year’s STEP (South Tyneside Enterprise Partnership) Awards.

Geoff Ford, MBE and chairman of £10 million turnover company Ford Component Manufacturing, said: “Winners in the past have been catapulted into the national spotlight and there isn’t a better platform or starting point for them than entering an opportunity such as this, it really is a chance in a lifetime.”
