More filming for North Tyneside

North Tyneside Council has signed a historic charter this week with the North East’s regional screen agency, Northern Film & Media.

Deborah Anderson, Operations Director at Northern Film & Media said: “The Filming Friendly Partnership is a key part of Northern Film & Media’s strategy to bring more film and TV production to the North East.

“The signing is all about taking a step forward, working in partnership with the region’s local authorities, working together to make the region a more attractive, cost effective and efficient place to shoot. It is also about securing the financial and social benefits that filming can bring to a region. £7m is brought into the region every year through production, which works out at £20,000 a day spent on crew and facilities, as well as hotels, restaurants and bars.”

North Tyneside Council is the 15th of the region’s 25 local authorities to sign the charter.

John Harrison, North Tyneside’s elected mayor, said: “North Tyneside has some fantastic assets, which we’re naturally keen to promote to a regional, national and international audience.

“Our council team is committed to offering the best possible service to production companies and I’m delighted we are signing up to the filming friendly charter.”

Several Film productions had already a huge impact on the area. Alnwick enjoyed a 120% increase in visitor numbers resulting in an additional £9m injection into the local economy following the filming of Harry Potter at Alnwick Castle.

Keira Knightley and James McAvoy film Atonement gave 1000 local extras the experience of being part of a major feature film on the beaches of Redcar and attracted around 70,000 people to the region to watch the filmmaking process.
