Welcome to the first in a new series of articles from Equality and Diversity Services Ltd. Samantha Latif and Liaquat Latif are company directors of Equality and Diversity Services Ltd, and will be providing us with information and advice around human rights legislation, equality and diversity issues and training.

Liaquat’s Latif Solicitors has been established for seven years providing immigration advice, but is also a background which their new training company (Equality and Diversity Services) is drawing upon.

Two years ago Liaquat Latif’s North East Ethnic Diversity Solicitors Group achieved an appeals and tribunal success rate of 99%, making them the top immigration solicitors in the North East and one of the leading UK immigration specialists.

Liaquat, in partnership with other solicitors and the Law Society, was determined to help other solicitors and law students from diverse backgrounds.

The group aims to provide law practitioners and students the opportunity to network and discuss issues around ethnic diversity in the legal profession. It has already given a number of students from Northumbria University work placements and work experience, and helps with practical advice for solicitors wanting to set up their own firms.

The vision for future is to set up a formal system where law students will be able to secure summer work placements giving them valuable on the job experience, and to provide relevant CPD training around diversity.

Liaquat Latif recently spoke at an at Northumbria University event aimed at promoting diversity. The event was designed to discuss the business advantages of diversity, acknowledging the moral, legal, demographic and economic strategies built around core organisations such as the legal profession.

Other speakers were the law society president Paul Marsh; Caroline Wilson, Director of Diversity Eversheds; and Ola Oduwole from Barrrow in Furness Borough Local Authority.
