Employers show commitment to disabled workers
The importance of disabled employees to the North East’s workforce was highlighted at an event last week.
Business leaders from across Northumberland, Tyneside and Wear Valley met at St James’ Park, Newcastle for the event organized by Jobcentre Plus.
More than thirty North East companies and public sector organisations were recognised for their commitment to employ disabled people by receiving the “Positive about Disabled People” two ticks award.
The Disability Symbol is given to employers who pledge to meet five commitments regarding the recruitment, employment, retention and career development of people with disabilities.
Jan Thirlaway, regional Customer Service Director for Jobcentre Plus, said: “I am delighted to see so many local organisations demonstrating their positive commitment to employing and supporting disabled people in work.
“Creating a diverse workforce is not just about corporate responsibility. It means providing opportunity and independence people and that is at the core of what Jobcentre Plus is all about.”
