Nissan announce 100 new jobs

The Nissan factory in Sunderland is to recruit 100 manufacturing staff on a short-term basis to meet a “spike” in demand from scrappage schemes across Europe.

To cope with an additional 24,000 orders for Sunderland made cars, the 100 three-month contracts are on top of 250 temporary manufacturing roles announced in May and June.

Nissan Senior Vise President for Manufacturing in Europe, Trevor Mann, said: “We are currently experiencing a short-term but significant spike in demand for Sunderland models as a result of scrappage incentive schemes.

“In particular, Micra and Note are proving extremely popular, and account for around two thirds of all Nissan scrappage sales across our four main European markets.”

There has been more than 120,000 orders for new vehicles since the scrappage scheme was announced, with the European Automotive Manufacturer’s Association saying there was a rise of 2.4% in new car registration across 28 European countries compared to this time last year.

A spokesperson from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills said: “It is good news that Nissan is recruiting. We introduced a scrappage scheme in the UK to deliver a much needed boost to the automotive industry and it is great to see that support our government and others are offering across Europe is working.”
