Agency aims to Generate success
A North East music consultant has warned the region’s musicians that the internet alone will not guarantee them stardom.
Speaking ahead of the Generator Compact workshop at Dance City in Newcastle, Damian Baetens, of Transmit Consulting, has said a strategic marketing plan is the only way for artists to make their mark in an increasingly competitive market.
He said: “Bands have got an excellent platform to showcase themselves now, but they need to be aware of the bigger picture.
“The internet is part of the marketing mix, but live music is bigger than ever and word of mouth is the best form of promotion a band or musician can get.”
The new programme of workshops has been launched by the Generator music agency, and is designed to help bands, producers and labels promote their music to the media and the industry.
The short courses also look at DIY marketing campaigns designed for those who want to release their own material into the market.
Damian Baetens explained: “I advise people on how to set up their own label and get their records out there.
“The days of knocking on the doors of record companies and getting signed are over. People expect bands to have singles out, records in the marketplace, songs on the radio and reviews in the press.”
Damian has said that musicians, managers and labels alike must now have a clear idea that will save them time, money and increase the chances of success.
He added: “The distribution of music is certainly different now but the actual techniques of marketing hasn’t changed.
“People think that by putting music on iTunes will get them signed, but that is only one strand of the marketing project.”
