Jobs will be a topic of conversation this Christmas
Banter over Christmas dinner will feature jobs and careers as a major topic, a survey has revealed.
Jobs and careers (24%) will be the top topic of conversation over Christmas dinner in the North East this year, once discussions about people’s New Year’s resolutions (27%) and how dry or juicy the turkey is (34%) have been concluded.
A survey by the Careers Advice Service shows that almost one in five people in the North East are worried about their jobs and 57% are concerned about buying presents.
The survey shows that 73% in the North East say they feel better when they’ve talked to someone about their worries. However a third (29%) confess that they rarely talk about things that distress them and 17% say they found it difficult to ask for help because they feel too shy or embarrassed.
Chris Roberts, Regional Director, Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East, said: “People are naturally worried about their careers and their futures in these uncertain times but help is available to suit everyone, whether it be over the phone of face to face. We all lead busy lives and the flexibility of the support available ensures that everyone, no matter what their personal circumstances, can benefit.
“We know that people are concerned about their job and careers at Christmas, but rather than talk about it people tend to bottle up these concerns instead. It can help to talk to a professional and independent person to get a fresh perspective on your career.”
Further survey findings show that 55 per cent of people in the North East are considering a career change but have put their plans on hold until next year.
