£50k ‘Big Business, Big Society’ scheme launched

One of the North East’s screen agencies has teamed up with a former digital media chief to launch a new £50k initiative designed to develop the best society-improving North East digital business ideas.

Ex-Endemol digital media Chief Peter Cowley has teamed with Northern Film & Media (NFM) to offer business or individuals from the region the chance to set up their own digital media business with the funding.

In collaboration with Sunderland City council the agency is looking for commercially viable web, mobile and interactive projects that fit with the notion of the ‘Big Society’.

The search will prioritise projects that have the ability to achieve global success.

Peter Cowley, Founder, Spirit Digital Media: “I was excited about the initiative as soon as Northern Film & Media approached me to be involved. With up to £50k available for the right projects, the agency is supporting commercial-creative innovation and creating the ideal conditions to develop digital ideas.

“I’m confident that the project will lead to the launch of a wave of life-improving North East digital businesses.”

The programme is inspired by the empowerment potential of the web and the coalition Government’s notion that sound services are no longer about what Government can do for individuals, but what individuals can do for themselves.

Focusing on quality creative content, shortlisted ideas will be developed by Spirit Digital Media boss Cowley, McIntosh and NFM’s Creative Industry Manager, Roxy Bramley.
