Olympic Torch to pass through North Tyneside
Olympic fever is set to hit North Tyneside, as it was today announced that that torch will pass through the area on its way to the London 2012 Games.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced that the torch will pass through on June 15 2012, as part of its 70 day journey around the UK.
The torch will pass through Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Tynemouth, North Shields and Wallsend, but the organizers are keen to get as many residents of North Tyneside involved as possible.
The Mayor of North Tyneside Linda Arkley said: “I’m delighted that North Tyneside’s residents will have the opportunity to welcome the Olympic Flame.
“It’s a great opportunity for our communities to be part of what is set to be a really exciting time for this country.
“In North Tyneside, we hope residents will also be inspired by our Year of the Games, which will offer the chance to get involved in a variety of events and activities.”
As well as hosting the Olympic Torch, North Tyneside will also host a full calendar of activities based around the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be supported by local sports clubs and community organizations.
