Inge Johnson, The Gates Durham

Since 2008 the UK retail economy has fallen on hard times as shoppers stop spending, and a number of household names fall into administration. Many are disheartened by the downturn, but Inge Johnson centre manager of The Gates Shopping Centre, is determined to overcome the challenges of the recession.

Since joining The Gates in 2003, Inge has worked in a number of positions, before she was eventually given overall responsibility for the Centre in 2007. During this period she has witnessed enormous change.

“When I arrived, Waitrose was the anchor store but after they left in 2008 it created a void and we struggled to attract brands into the centre.” She recounts.

“However, we used this opportunity find new and innovative ways of using the space on the malls, which also helped us to attract a different type of audience.”

The Centre now regularly plays host to art exhibits and wedding fairs, which has also helped Inge and her team to build up strong links with members of the Durham community.

“As well as allowing artists to use our free spaces, we also support St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham. Patients use The Gates as a focus place to meet, and by supporting them it allows us to keep in touch with people living in the City.”

Despite her positive attitude, the job does not come with out its challenges, and Inge admits that it has been difficult at times to find businesses to fill the empty shops. Nontheless, she has taken inspiration from Mary Portas and her High Street Review to draw in shoppers and retailers.

“We have focussed on what people really need, because if we can provide that they will be more encouraged to come into the Centre.

“We have looked at parking rates, and have brought in a gym with a personal trainer facility, which have so far both been successful ventures.”

She also works closely with both landlords and tenants to ensure any issues are addresse

“We help the landlords to fill the units, and run workshops with tenants to give help and advice. This offers them real value, and also shows then how much we value them - we are keen not to lose them.”

“I’m incredibly passionate about The Gates, and while we have seen many changes I am determined to keep on getting shoppers through our doors.”
