Using video in business communications
Using video can significantly improve business communications, but making it flexible and accessible is key says Colin Farquhar, CEO at Exterity
With multiple stakeholders communicating a variety of messages within and between businesses, delivering that message effectively can be challenging. Video can be a great way of communicating complex information efficiently as it’s quick and engaging. The California State University released research that concluded ’People only remember 10% of what they hear, 20% of what they read, but about 80% of what they see and do.“ Watching a five-minute video is faster and more enjoyable than reading a 100 page manual and staff will retain more of the information. The key to utilising video effectively within a business is making it accessible and giving users the flexibility to watch content live or on demand.
Using the existing IP network, an IPTV system can stream live TV and video to TVs, video displays and personal computers for an unlimited number of users within a building. This can help businesses streamline resources and create higher-impact customer and staff communications. The applications are manifold; a television news feed to decision-makers can keep them on top of challenges and opportunities. Video on-demand is a powerful tool for sales presentations and training. Digital signage can communicate important company announcements to staff and help establish branding in visitor areas. With the Olympics around the corner IPTV can offer an effective way of streaming footage to recreation areas and the desktop to help boost staff morale and reduce absenteeism.
With an increase in the use of smartphones and tablets, staff and visitors have an extra layer of flexibility to view video content via their mobiles in the office. Staff may want to show footage on a tablet as part of a sales presentation or view an on-demand training video in the canteen area during
their lunch break without having to previously download the content. Some IPTV systems allow businesses to stream video over Wi-Fi to mobile devices. The same content can then be distributed to a TV, desktop, tablet and mobile phone from one original source while preserving the quality
of the original content. An IPTV system that integrates mobile streaming can give businesses the accessibility and flexibility to deliver the video content they need, when they need it, providing an effective video communication solution that offers more than traditional IPTV.
