Financial Ombudsman complaints fall

The levels of complaints to the financial ombudsman fell between April and June, but were still dominated by claims of payment protection insurance (PPI) mis-selling.

56% of complaints over the period were about PPI, followed by those regarding current accounts and credit card accounts - although these accounted for only 6% of complaints each.

During the period there was a total of 57,790 complaints, lower than the previous quarter when there were 76,522 cases, and even less than the same period in 2011 when there were 80,711 cases.

In over half of all complaints the ombudsman found in favour of the claimants.

Despite an overall fall in claims there was an increase in the number of complaints about mortgages, including concerns over meeting payments and cases where charges had been added to the mortgage balance.

Under the current climate, many lenders are required to treat customers sympathetically, ensuring they make “reasonable attempts” to agree to repayments. Under these regulations lenders and customers are required to communicate openly and provide information when it is requested.
