BAA lose appeal against sale of Stansted airport
BAA has lost its most recent appeal against the Competition Commission’s ruling that it must sell off Stansted Airport.
This is the latest in a line of challenges the airport operator has made against the Court of Appeal judgement that was first made in 2009.
At that ruling that Spanish-owned company was told that it had to sell Gatwick, Stansted and either Glasgow or Stansted airports.
BAA has already sold Gatwick and recently agreed to sell Edinburgh Airport, but has contested the decision on Stansted on numerous occasions.
Commenting on the decision, the chairman of the commission’s BAA Remedies Implementation Group Laura Carstensen said: “It remains the right decision in the interests of passengers and airlines and it is surely now time for BAA to accept the verdict and proceed with the sale.”
However, BAA are unhappy at being forced to sell airports at such a difficult economic time.
