Human error blamed for Nationwide problems
Human error has been blamed for an incident which saw more than 700,000 Nationwide Building Society customers charged twice for using their Visa debit cards.
Around 50,000 customers were sent overdrawn by the mistake, and many only realised after their cards were rejected after they accidentally made a double payment. Other customers who had sufficient funds in their accounts had also had their online payments rejected.
A spokesperson from Nationwide said: “Debit transactions made on 24 July have been taken again on the 25th. This is a one-off incident that is down to human error. Duplicated transactions will all be corrected overnight.
Many customers affected by overdraft charges have not been able to use their accounts, and it is unclear whether they will be automatically refunded, or whether they have to apply for it to be returned.
This will come as a massive blow to the building society, who has become a go to destination for many customers following problems at high street banks. This month Nationwide saw a 45% increase in people transferring their main account to the society.
