July shows greater demand for workers
A greater demand for engineers, construction workers, nurses, care workers and medical staff has been reported in July’s jobs report, as vacancies in the private sector balance out a decrease in public sector posts.
Figures published today in the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs show that 5 out of 8 sectors have a need for more staff, however the remaining 3 sectors, signalled a decrease in vacancies in blue collar, financial and hotel industries.
Candidate availability is also on the rise, with both permanent and temporary staff availability showing a steady improvement.
Despite a positive outlook for employment in the majority of industries, July has seen a decrease in both permanent and temporary placements, and wages for temporary workers has fallen.
Although staff appointments have fallen, the decline is less than it has been in previous months in 2012, showing that this trend is slowing.
The Partner and Head of Business Services at KPMG, Bernard Brown, highlighted a lack of confidence in recruitment.
He said: “Only a few weeks ago there was an audible sigh of relief across the UK’s workforce as official employment figures indicated signs of improvement.
“However, my concern is that any sigh of relief may be mistaken for a groan of exasperation, because the rate at which employers are recruiting has decreased for the second consecutive month, and this suggests that there is still a high degree of uncertainty.
“After so much debate surrounding employment prospects across public services there is, at least, some good news with higher demand across private businesses offsetting the slowdown in public sector recruitment.”
