£19m Hull school project underway

Construction and regeneration group, Morgan Sindall, is set to start work on a £19.2m school project in Hull.

The firm will undertake a new build and refurbishment project at St Mary’s College, which includes a new 70,000 sq ft teaching block, designed by Capita Symonds.

It is part of the wider £400m Hull Building Schools for the Future programme, and Morgan Sindall has completed work on two other schools under the scheme.

Gordon Ray, North East construction managing director at Morgan Sindall, said: “The project at St Mary’s College is the latest step in Hull’s largest regeneration scheme which is continuing to transform the education facilities in the city, providing state-of-the-art learning environments for generations to come.

“Not only are we refurbishing the traditional subject classrooms such as English and Maths, with the new build we are providing an inspirational place of learning - upgrading the facilities of the college’s more specialist areas such as sports, sciences, drama, arts, ICT and media to create a highly specialised learning hub.

“A programme of works of this size and calibre has a huge impact on the economy of the city and we always look to support the communities in which we work. We will be aiming to work with approximately 50 subcontractors and recruit up to 15 apprentices throughout the lifetime of the project.”

The St Mary’s project will create 12 humanities classrooms, six 6th form classrooms, 14 sciences labs, as well as arts space, ICT suites and a learning resource centre.

Morgan Sindall Investments is part of a tripartite partnership, Hull Esteem Consortium, which also includes Hull-based Sewell Group and Roberston Capital Projects.

Hull Esteem Consortium, together with Hull City Council and Partnership for Schools, form a local education partnership (LEP) which provides project and operational management and new project development services, ensuring the BSF programme is delivered on time and on budget.
