What a treat! - restaurant review

We were invited to attend the first birthday of David Kennedy’s River Café. It was our first time in the restaurant so had no expectations on food or general ambience.

We were greeted by friendly bar staff who took our coats. A singer/pianist set the atmosphere, playing soft music accompanied by a good, quality voice. The entertainment didn’t drown the chatter though, across a group of about 30 people.

Following a number of glasses of champagne, we were seated and offered a selection of dishes. To start we were offered the delightful choice of Jerusalem Artichoke Soup, Course Country Pate, Red Pepper Chutney, Toast or Crab & Ricotta Cannelloni. As the restaurant is on the front of the Fish Quay, I believe most of the table selected the crab & ricotta cannelloni. The consistency and freshness of the meat was delectable and the size of the portion was perfect. The mains choices consistent of Daube of Beef, Saffron Mash, Pan Roast Cod, Crushed Potatoes – Lemongrass & Coconut Mussel Broth or Autumn Squash Risotto, Crispy Sage, Parmesan. Again, most of the table elected to go for the daube of beef. The beef must have been cooked for a number of hours, the vegetables were done to perfection and the potato was just perfect. To finish the meal, we were offered the selection of Apple & Pear Crumble, White Chocolate Cream, Almond Cake, Blackberry Mousse or a Selection of Cheese, Oat Cakes & Chutney. The cheese board was again most of our table’s favourite and we were not disappointed. A beautiful selection of cheese that has been allowed to soften to room temperature, served with a small selection of biscuits and bread.

The service was excellent throughout, and the meal a delight.

David Kenneday’s Rive Café is a must to try. Check out his special offers on his website, and take a trip down to the fish quay and enjoy not only his wonderful food but also the growing developments of our wonderful fish quay – now a conservation area.
