Stobart Barristers Recognised At Prestigious National Legal Awards
Stobart Barristers, based in Manchester’s King Street, has been described as a legal industry pioneer at the sector’s prestigious FT Innovative Lawyers Awards.
At the awards, which took place last Thursday night in London, Stobart Barristers was ‘highly commended’ by the judges for its innovative approach to providing pay-as-you-go direct access to the bar.
“This is a real coup for us, considering how long we’ve been trading,” said Trevor Howarth who is the founder of Stobart Barristers which launched in May 2012.
He continued, “Recognition from the legal services industry is a seal of approval which demonstrates that the business model we’ve adopted is pioneering in the legal services market.”
Stobart Barristers is a new division of the UK-leading logistics business, The Stobart Group and is the brainchild of Trevor Howarth who is the Group’s Legal Director.
The service links members of the public direct to a barrister without needing to employ a law firm first. It uses a pricing model under which its clients agree and pay a fixed-fee through the ‘pay-as-you-go’ model during the litigation process.
Howarth explained, “The key to our success is simply that we save our clients both time and money by putting them in touch with expert advice sooner. We have a national panel of barristers that are selected for their ability to meet our clients’ needs. It’s a formula that naturally appeals to people, especially during tough economic conditions.”
Stobart Barristers was launched following the Stobart Group’s decision to employ its own barristers without a solicitor in 2008, a move which has created significant savings on the company’s annual legal fees.
Since its launch, Stobart Barristers is already running at four times what was predicted in the original business plan and has secured 70 per cent of the UK’s available barristers on their books.
Howarth concluded, “The success we’ve already enjoyed shows that our fixed fee model is unlocking a latent demand for barristers’ services which is about 50 per cent cheaper than if it were provided via a solicitor.”
