Adding video to your website
Five reasons why adding video to your website could be a wise move
According to a recent article by Jenifer Dunphy over at the E-consultancy blog (http://econsultancy.com/uk/blog/9583-how-video-marketing-powers-seo), now is a good time for webmasters to start including a video element to their website and SEO strategies, if they haven’t already.
“Leveraging your online videos is often key to increasing search rankings,” says Dunphy. “We all know that the search engines use social signals as a factor in their overall ranking algorithm, and as the role of social signals becomes increasingly important, so will the role of online video in your overall search and social strategy.”
She has a good point – videos are perfect for sharing due to their self-contained nature, convenience and instantaneousness, making them a great way to earn extra social networking points (which in turn is having a rapidly growing significance in the search engine results). But harnessing the SEO power of social signals isn’t the only reason for investing in some online video content, and if you’re unconvinced here are five more.
1. Video makes your business look goodSimply using video marketing on your website and in your off-site strategies can give your online reputation a boost, provided it’s done well. Increasingly, web users don’t just want static web pages with text and a few pictures, they want something more dynamic and up to date, and online video fits the bill perfectly. Of course, it’s worth noting that video only makes you look good if it is professional, interesting and serves a purpose. Poorly shot and cheesily scripted videos can have quite the opposite effect.
2. People are lazy and time is shortWhy make your customers read through reams of information and give them the chance to get bored when you can engage them in a quicker and much more direct way with a video?
3. It enables you to show not tellYou can tell visitors to your website about your products or services till your blue in the face, but in many cases it’s far more effective to show them. As well as giving you the chance to demonstrate your products in action, online videos are also perfect for demonstrating difficult concepts that might otherwise bore or bamboozle.
4. Video can give your business a human face You should probably steer clear of launching a ‘The Office’ style docudrama about life in your company, but a little ‘behind the scenes’ footage can help to put a human face on your online presence.
5. Online video’s are easy to distribute and fast to spread
Once you’ve made your video or series of videos there are plenty of ways to get them in front of web users. Setting up your own YouTube channel is relatively easy and there’s always a chance you could have a viral hit on your hands. Social networks like Facebook and Google+ are also effective ways of publicising your videos, and if they’re done well then people are likely to share them with their online friends.
