MHA Lightings longstanding client shortlisted for top award

MHA Lighting’s longstanding client shortlisted for top industry award

Manchester Airport Group is in the running to be named ‘Client of the Year’ in prestigious Lux Awards 2012

AWARD-winning lighting company MHA Lighting is proud to announce that its longstanding customer Manchester Airport Group has been named a finalist in the Client of the Year category in the Lux Awards 2012.

Nominated by MHA Lighting, Manchester Airport was recognised as a client that has used lighting in exceptional ways to improve its lit environment and reduce energy consumption and Co2.

Following Manchester Airport’s major commitment in 2009 to reduce its carbon footprint, the Airport Group set out to be the first of its kind to have carbon neutral ground operations by 2015 and sought a Lighting solution that would allow them to achieve this mammoth task.

Over the last 18 months, MHA has quickly become one of the airport’s preferred suppliers, providing them with more than £500,000 worth of lighting products, spanning three major projects.

This has allowed the Airport to cut its lighting energy consumption by 63% and will achieve overall Co2 reductions of 3170 tonnes over the product lifetime.

Jonathan Beswick, Project Technician, Manchester Airport, said: “As the UK’s largest domestically-owned airport operator, we recognise that we have a huge responsibility to the environment and sought lighting technologies and designs that would allow us to live up to our obligation.”

Beswick added: “MHA Lighting’s bespoke retrofit solutions have more than exceeded our expectations and we are delighted to have been able to work closely with MHA over the last 18 months, to find the right solutions for different applications within the airport.”

MHA Lighting’s managing director Tom Harrison said: “To have our nomination ratified in this way is testament to the great working relationship we have with this forward-thinking airport.

“Their dedication to becoming the first airport to have carbon neutral ground operations by 2015 is truly inspiring and we are delighted to play a pivotal role in helping them make their goal a reality.

“We wish them luck with the Award and are extremely proud that our projects have helped them be shortlisted for this top lighting industry accolade.”

In November 2010, MHA supplied 2140 LB Lite LED lights for Manchester Airport’s Terminal Two and Terminal Three multi-storey car parks, which will achieve an overall Co2 reduction of 3170 tonnes over the product lifetime.

Following the success of the first project, MHA’s fittings were selected for Terminal Two Arrivals in addition to Departures concourse and baggage reclaim hall, replacing 280watt metal halides (including ballast losses).

MHA installed their award-winning High Bay TiLite, which is just 123 watts with ballast and delivers 300 lux to the floor. These lights replaced the metal Halides on a one-for-one basis and not only improved lighting levels and uniformity within the concourse, but instantly achieved a 57% energy saving.

The third project, which was completed in August saw MHA exchange under canopy lighting with its patented C Lite technology, replacing 400 watt (without ballast) Metal Halides with their new C90/700 fitting. This unit uses just 180 watts (including ballast) and replaced the Metal Halides on a one-for-one basis. Installed at a height of nine meters, it provides more than 180 Lux to the floor. This has allowed the Airport to cut its lighting energy consumption by 63%.

Beswick added: “MHA Lighting is demonstrating right here at Manchester Airport that with forward thinking design, it is possible to improve light levels, while reducing energy consumption and carbon impact.”

From over 200 applicants, Manchester Airport joins six other finalists in the Client of the Year category, including: Network Rail, Next and Waitrose.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony taking place on November 6, at The Natural History Museum, London.
