New wonder pad to save the NHS millions
One of the leading suppliers of woundcare and dermatology products, Crawford Healthcare, has this week launched a new product that is expected to save the NHS millions of pounds a year.
KerraPro is a new range of pressure-reducing pads that are designed to help prevent pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers are often caused when a patient’s skin rests against a surface and pressure builds up which can cause the skin to breakdown and ulcers to form. These ulcers are extremely painful and very difficult to treat, costing the NHS billions of pounds a year. However, they are completely preventable.
The ulcers are most often found in people who are immobile or have low levels of mobility and it is estimated that around 412,000* people are likely to develop them each year. This includes between 4% and 10% of patients in hospital.
The amount spent on treating pressure ulcers per year is estimated to be between £1.4billion and £2.1billion. On average a patient’s stay in hospital is increased by up to four days when they are suffering from a pressure ulcer. The NHS now lists the ulcers as a ‘zero event’, yet until now they have been difficult to eradicate.
Unlike other products, Crawford Healthcare’s specially formulated KerraPro is made from silicone, making it extremely stable, compression resistant and odourless. In addition it can be cleaned and reused on the same patient.
Richard Anderson, CEO of Crawford Healthcare Ltd comments: “Our Research and Development team has worked extremely hard to develop an innovative product that we believe will revolutionise this area of woundcare.
“KerraPro will help prevent patients from becoming uncomfortable and in pain. It will also have a positive impact on the NHS by reducing nursing and treatment time and other resources that go towards dealing with this unnecessary problem.”
Crawford Healthcare is officially launching the range of KerraPro products at the Wounds UK Exhibition in Harrogate from 12-14 November. For more information visit www.crawfordhealthcare.com.
