Face the music

Reading musician Damon Krukowski’s article on pitchfork about the meagre sums that bands and artists are paid by music streaming platforms such as Spotify, it raises some interesting questions about the business of these online streaming names.

The article pointed out that musicians are paid as little as $0.004611 per play of their track. However, last year Spotify posted hefty losses. This is partly because as the library grows, the company needs to spend more on royalty payments.

Does it look like a sustainable business? Presumably Spotify think growth of their premium subscription base will be consistent with library growth.
