North East green scheme creates work for 500

An energy scheme aimed at improving efficiency in 2,300 North East homes has claimed it will create work for 500 people in the region.

GoWarm Gresham and GoWarm Parkfield are the two initiatives currently installing systems into houses in Middlesbrough and Stockton, with the hope of saving hundreds of people from “fuel poverty”.

Community Energy Solutions (CES), the Jarrow-based firm that runs the GoWarm Schemes, said it has created 20 internal posts, and also expects to increase workloads for external contractors.

The scheme, which will run until Spring this year, offers a package of necessary measures which could include free wall insulation and new heating systems that hope to reduce fuel bills and cut carbon emissions by over 260,000 tonnes.

CES’ assessors and surveyors have benefitted from increased demand as a result of the green initiative, while North East installers and contractors have also seen a rise in the amount of work generated in the region.

Both GoWarm projects are expected to cost a total £11m, and are being supported by the Stockton Borough Council with funding from Yorkshire-based Eggborough Power.

Director of GoWarm, Karen Hindhaugh commented: “The GoWarm Parkfield and Gresham schemes have proven hugely beneficial over the past few months, not just for the homeowners but for the wider regional economy as a whole.

“Work has already been completed on more than 500 properties, but there is still plenty of work to come for our contractors and sub-contractors as they finalise the remaining households.”
